Data Protection

The law governing Data Protection is covered by the Data Protection Act 1998 (which came in to force on 1/3/2000) and replaced the Data Protection Act 1984. Under the 1998 Act, a Scout Group can be exempt from notification (as they are classed as 'not for profit organisations') where Personal Data can be processed for the purposes of:

  1. establishing or maintaining membership or support of the Scout Group
  2. for providing Scouting activities to members or those who have regular contact with the Group

However, in order that the Leaders can deal with medical emergencies for your child(ren) whilst on Scouting activities, it is recommended that the Leaders hold information relating to health, disabilities, religion/faith and race/ethnic. Although this will ONLY be used in connection with your child(ren)'s membership in the Scout Movement, this information is classed as sensitive and does need your specific consent, even though it will not be passed to third parties outside the Scout Movement without your permission.
