Gift Aid

Some important Questions that have been asked - and the various Answers

I pay higher rate tax, what figures do I put on my 'Self Assessment' form?

The amount you put on the SA form is the ACTUAL 'subs paid' in the TAX YEAR. Your best option is to contact our Group Treasurer and he will give you the figures to put down on a Tax Return. The group then reclaims the Basic Rate tax back at 25% of the subs paid.

Should I complete a form if I don't pay UK income tax?

To stop the Group 'chasing you up' please return the Gift Aid form deleting the sentence relating to: "treat all membership subscriptions as Gift Aid".

Q: I sign the cheques and pay the bills but I don't work or pay tax, can I fill in the 'Gift Aid' declaration?

You can provide the details BUT we need the name & address to be that of a TAX payer who is paying the subscriptions for a minor (this could be a parent, partner, grandparent, carer or even an uncle or aunt).

There is nowhere on the letter or the form you gave for me to 'sign' the 'Gift Aid' declaration?

The 'Gift Aid' declaration does NOT need to be signed! As long as the 'tax payer' agrees verbally or in writing (by fax, text message, email) and confirms they pay sufficient tax to cover the tax being reclaimed, and gives FULL name, address and postcode we can apply to reclaim the tax back on subscriptions paid.

The Scout Group has registered with HM Revenue & Customs to enable it to reclaim the tax paid on Members' subscriptions and donations, from now on and for past 6 tax years, if applicable. For us to claim a valuable 25p in every £1 of subscription you pay, we need you to complete and return the 'declaration' - download and print off the form from "Useful Documents".

I have a child in the Beavers and Cubs, do I need to complete TWO 'Gift Aid' form?

NO. only ONE form is needed for subscriptions paid by a tax payer for any number of minors (children) but PLEASE let the Treasurer know an existing declaration now covers more than one youngster.

Is it worth bothering about if the Group only gets back less than 23 pounds for the year's subs for a Cub?

It really IS worth the effort! HMRC (the Taxman) has given us £1265 for our 2007/08 'Gift Aid' claim.

I have already agreed to 'Gift Aid' my payments to the Church, so can I 'Gift Aid' to the Scouts as well?

YES, you can 'Gift Aid' to the Scouts as well. You can make any number of 'Gift Aid' declarations, so long as you pay Income Tax or Capital Gain Tax to cover the total amount of tax being reclaimed in the tax year.
