My Recollections of the History of the 3rd Bramshill Scout Group

By Ray Bunce ~ Group Scout Leader

Chapter One

Scouting in Yateley has been part of the local community now for 100years. However in the seventies Yateley was experiencing growth with families moving to the area with young children. Scouting was to prove so popular that the existing Yateley Scout Group, now called the 9th Bramshill, could not accommodate all those boys wanting to join. Every night of the week was used for some meeting and the Group had three Cub Packs, two Scout Troops and one Venture unit.

Towards the end of the seventies a group of interested individuals got together to form a new Group, which is now called at the 3rd Bramshill (Yateley Green) Scout Group. The first meetings were held in an old brick and wood hut situated in the grounds of Yateley Village Hall on the edge of Yateley Green hence the name. After the Village Hall was refurbished we moved into these premises but it was still not home as there were always other users within the building to consider.

No Scout Group runs without its Executive Committee and the committee of these times were extremely active and within 10 years had raised sufficient funds to build the Scout Lodge that you know today, with the help of grants both from Hart and Hampshire.

To raise the much needed funds the committee organised monthly Jumble sales, Barn Dances and Discos, Race Nights, Sponsored events, Garden Parties that you paid to go to and really the list has been endless. The Yateley May Fayre has also proved to be an extremely important event in our fundraising calendar that still carries on today. The most memorable event that I recall was the first Yateley Carnival when we entered our float as Cavemen and we won the .Best Youth Section.. Our buckets were so full of coins that the Cubs had a job to lift them!! Everyone involved had great fun not just on the hot sunny day of the Carnival but also in the preparation weeks in advance.

Please look out for further Episodes ... to help fill in the jigsaw. If you know of anyone with past or present association with our Group that has some interesting tales please get it touch.
